Alongside Thalassa Consulting, I work as a science journalist and writer. I keep the two separate. For clients, this means:
- I don't report as a journalist on organisations I work for, during our collaboration or for two years after.
- For NGOs, I offer scientific support (science communication, citizen science, data analysis and research), not spokesperson or campaign work.
- If a job overlaps with a story I'm working on, I'll tell you before we start.
A Buon Rendere
From 2022 to 2025 I worked with Associazione Comuni Virtuosi on A Buon Rendere (ABR), the Italian campaign for a deposit return system (DRS) for beverage containers, writing technical articles on DRS around the world for the campaign. Since 2026 I only analyse the brand-audit data that people collect with ABR Radar, the campaign's citizen science tool.
Deposit return systems were already a subject I knew as a journalist. I had covered them for Renewable Matters, and that is why the campaign sought me out. Once I began working with Associazione Comuni Virtuosi, I turned down commissions to write specifically about DRS. My reporting for the magazine continued on the wider EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), of which DRS is one provision. My editor knew about the collaboration, and it was public on my LinkedIn profile, though I did not state it in the articles themselves. Today I would. The same principle applies now: while I work with the campaign, I do not report on DRS.
